Set beside the Huangpu River and Shanghai’s historic Bund, Wanda Reign on the Bund is a hotel shaped by the contrast that defines the city itself. On one side are the historic buildings of the Bund, while across the river rises the modern skyline of Pudong. This location gives the hotel some of the most striking views in Shanghai and makes the city an important part of the experience.
The hotel opened in June 2016 as the flagship property of Wanda Hotels & Resorts. Its exterior was created by Foster + Partners, while the interiors were developed by the Wanda Design Institute. The design takes inspiration from Shanghai in the 1920s and 1930s, mixing Art Deco details with Chinese influences, including magnolia patterns, traditional Suzhou embroidery, marble, jade and contemporary Chinese art.
The rooms and suites continue this mix of past and present. Modern technology sits alongside rich materials and details inspired by old Shanghai, while many rooms look towards the Bund, the Huangpu River, Pudong or Yu Garden. The result is a hotel that feels strongly connected to its location rather than simply following an international luxury style.
Food and social spaces are also an important part of the hotel. Guests can choose between several restaurants and lounges, while the upper floors open onto one of its most memorable areas: a large rooftop terrace overlooking the river and the Pudong skyline. The hotel also includes a spa, swimming pool, fitness facilities and spaces designed for events and private gatherings.
Outdoor design becomes particularly important on the rooftop, where the furniture needs to sit comfortably within such a powerful city setting. Vondom is part of this area through pieces from its Adan and Faz collections, adding a contemporary detail without distracting from the architecture or the view.
What makes Wanda Reign on the Bund stand out is its strong sense of place. It brings together the glamour of historic Shanghai, modern architecture and views of a city that is always changing. Rather than choosing between tradition and contemporary design, the hotel allows both to exist in the same space.
