Set on Isla Barú, just outside Cartagena, Sofitel Barú Calablanca Beach Resort is surrounded by white sand, tropical plants and the clear waters of the Colombian Caribbean. The resort opened on 1 December 2021, bringing Sofitel’s French approach to hospitality into a setting that feels very much connected to Colombia and the Caribbean.
The hotel has 187 rooms and suites, with balconies or terraces facing the sea. The buildings are spread along the coast rather than gathered into one large block, helping the resort feel open and closely connected to the landscape. From the rooms to the restaurants and outdoor spaces, views of the water are a constant part of the experience.
Food is another important part of the hotel. The resort opened with three restaurants and seven bars, including Calablanca, which brings together Colombian and Mediterranean food, and Humo, built around a robata-style grill. La Pérgola, on the rooftop, offers a more relaxed place to enjoy the evening and watch the sun set over Barú.
The experience goes beyond the beach. Guests have access to a spa, sauna, Turkish bath and yoga room, as well as water activities and trips around the island. Families are also well considered, with a dedicated children's area and activities that introduce guests to local traditions and the natural environment of Barú.
Nature plays an important role in the project. The coastline around the resort is home to more than 60 species of coral, and the property has its own nursery for native plants. Accor also identifies the resort as LEED certified, with measures including solar energy, water reuse, local building materials and native landscaping. This makes the connection with the surroundings more than just a visual part of the hotel.
Outdoor spaces naturally form a large part of life at a Caribbean resort, and contemporary furniture is used without taking attention away from the sea and landscape. Vondom lists Sofitel Barú as one of its 2022 hospitality projects, with pieces from the Ibiza and Spritz collections included in the furnishing. Their simple forms sit naturally within the relaxed outdoor character of the property.
What makes Sofitel Barú Calablanca interesting is the way the hotel works with its location. The design, food, outdoor areas and guest experience all lead back to the same idea: enjoying the Caribbean setting rather than trying to compete with it. It is modern and carefully designed, but the sea, the light and the landscape remain the strongest part of the story.
